1. What we collect
You do not need an account, a name or a phone number to read the news. What we collect:
- Technical data: IP address, browser, device, language, pages viewed, referrer and timestamps, recorded automatically in server logs and analytics.
- Cookies and similar technologies, described below.
- What you send us: news tips, complaints and advertising enquiries by email, including any name, phone number or email address you include.
- Reporter accounts: only our reporters have logins; we store their username, submitted stories and photographs.
2. Cookies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. We use:
- Essential cookies: remembering your language and a closed ad banner, for example. These need no consent.
- Analytics (Google Analytics 4): to learn which pages are read and how many people read them. Google truncates the IP address. You can opt out at https://tools.google.com/dlpage/gaoptout.
- Advertising (Google AdSense): see the next section.
You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings; some features may then stop working.
3. Google AdSense and advertising
We use Google AdSense to show advertisements on this website. This means:
- Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or to other websites.
- Google's use of advertising cookies (including the DoubleClick cookie) enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this and other sites on the internet.
- You may opt out of personalised advertising at https://www.google.com/settings/ads, and opt out of third-party vendors' cookies at https://www.aboutads.info/choices.
- How Google uses data on partner sites: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
- Other ad networks may also serve ads here; we do not control their cookies.
We also sell banner advertising directly through our own ads desk. For those banners we count views and clicks only; no personal data is collected.
4. How we use data
- To run the website, keep it secure and fix faults
- To see which stories and districts are read most, so we can improve coverage
- To show advertising and measure it
- To answer your emails and complaints
- To meet legal obligations
5. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it with Google (Analytics, AdSense), our hosting and email providers (who process data on our behalf) and with authorities when the law requires it. Reporters' notes are sent to Google Gemini for AI drafting; reader data is never sent to AI models.
6. Retention
Server logs are kept for up to 90 days, analytics data for 14 months (Google's default) and email correspondence for as long as needed, normally two years.
7. Your rights
You may access, correct or delete your data and object to processing, under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and, where it applies, the GDPR. Email info@nipunindia.com with the subject "Privacy request"; we respond within 30 days.
8. Children
This website is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
9. Security
We use HTTPS, access controls and encrypted backups. No transmission over the internet is completely secure.
