To effectively control the growing stray dog population in Belagavi city, Karnataka, local authorities have decided to set up a dedicated animal birth control and sterilization centre. The initiative aims to offer relief and protection to city residents from the increasing menace of stray dogs.

For this project, the Belagavi City Corporation has acquired a one-acre plot in Savagaon on the city outskirts. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Roshan issued orders allocating the one-acre revenue land in Belagavi taluka for the municipal body. Health officials noted that the site is away from residential areas, making it suitable for the sterilization facility.

Currently, surgeries on stray dogs are being conducted at a temporary shed in Hirebagewadi. Earlier, procedures were performed at a Srinagar center, but it was closed after local corporator Lakshmi Rathod raised objections. Operations were then shifted to Hirebagewadi, where locals have also voiced opposition. Sterilization work will continue at Hirebagewadi until the Savagaon facility is fully ready.

Additionally, the Belagavi City Corporation has designated 26 special feeding zones across the city to feed stray dogs. Officials confirmed that construction works for the Savagaon centre will be completed soon to make it fully operational.
